DAY OF DEAD

Artist:
Aran Wilkinson-Blanc is a local photographer/filmmaker/animator. He graduated the University of Calgary in 2002 with a BFA in Photography and has been working in that arena as well as animation. Recently he has begun to again take up video projects, embracing the new technical/creative playground that is high definition video. This summer he had the opportunity to create a short through Emmedia's Production Access program and has since been extending his knowledge of high-definition video.

Description:
"Day of Dead" is a "heavily re-compressed" video work featuring documentation of Calgary's 2009 "Zombie Walk." A recently developing event, the walk brings together a diverse assortment of people with a shared passion and creates a public collision of the banal and surreal. The event has no formal organizational structure, and is a perfect example of citizens finding a way of expressing themselves and in the process, purposely, clashing with their social environment. From a technical perspective, the piece is an experiment with repeatedly re-compressing my video, taking a pristine high definition signal and literally "crashing" it; forcing the information to be broken down, reinterpreted and re-encoded. A final piece featuring a social crash created through the destruction of the piece itself.
