Artist:
Andrea Mann is a Calgary-based visual artist working in film, video and animation. From a background in painting, printmaking, installation, photography and writing, she has organically followed her conceptual interests toward her current and lasting fascination with time-based media. With an insatiable appetite for knowledge and a particular interest in psychology and cultural anthropology, the themes she is driven to explore often also wander into other topics of observation, contemplation and reverie. She sees her art practice not just as a creative and intellectual pursuit, but also as an ongoing rebellion against alienation and apathy, two powerful conditions of our time.
Description:
With this contribution to the 'CRASH'-themed Emmedia Compression Camp, Andrea has created a simple, humorous contemplation of ways to live enthusiastically in the present moment - which only exists as temporary peace and order between the inevitable major and minor crashes that disrupt even our best-laid plans.
Mirai, the main character in the film, is a sweet and quirky young woman dutifully conforming to the expectations of the world. As circumstances change suddenly and abruptly, she questions and quickly dismisses her previous assumptions and starts to live in a more free and creative way.
The playful egg-themed narrative was initially inspired by the cliche idioms "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" and "Nest Egg." In addition to the mundane financial meanings behind the egg symbol in these phrases, the image of the egg also embodies in very obvious form, symbols for: the future, hope, fertility, birth and re-birth. Much of the appeal of the egg as the central image of the narrative lies in the very obviousness of these associations, and the humor that results. And yet somehow the egg remains an object of beauty and fascination despite all cliche and unrefined associations.
